See “Taming of the Shrew” for Free at Gaithersburg’s Outdoor Concert Pavilion

0 Comments 18 June 2009

“Taming of the Shrew will be performed as part of the Shakespeare on the Lawn series hosted at the City Hall Concert Pavillion. I remember going to see “Much Ado About Nothing” a few years back at the Concert Pavillion, and the Maryland Shakespeare Festival really puts on a  great performance. Go check it out!

Enjoy Shakespeare on the lawn and under the stars as the City of Gaithersburg and the Maryland Shakespeare Festival present “Taming of the Shrew” this July.  Two free performances will take place at the City Hall Concert Pavilion, 31 South Summit Avenue in Olde Towne Gaithersburg.  Please feel free to bring a blanket and a picnic to make the experience even more enjoyable.

The shows are set for Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11 at 8 p.m.  Note that the Friday performance will be sign interpreted.  The rain date if both performances are cancelled due to inclement weather is Sunday, July 12 at 4 p.m.

Maryland’s premier classical company tells the tale of two hot headed lovers battling their way to harmony!  Petruchio wants a rich wife and fancies himself a player. Kate wants out of her house, away from her sister’s simpering suitors, and won’t put up with anyone’s foolishness.  Fireworks fly, rules are broken and no one will be the same in this wacky comedy as true love must find a way to live in peace.  Enjoy this timeless battle of the sexes in a festive atmosphere with KIDZONE pre-show, live music and lots of laughs.

Embracing the definition of “festival” as a celebration, the Maryland Shakespeare Festival gives life to timeless stories, especially those by William Shakespeare, in a manner that inspires, challenges and entertains audiences and artists alike by working to the highest artistic standards.

Shakespeare on the Lawn is part of Gaithersburg’s On Stage outdoor summer entertainment series, presented by the City of Gaithersburg Cultural Arts Advisory Committee and funded in part by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.  For more information please call 301-258-6350 or visit the City’s website at www.gaithersburgmd.gov/onstage.

Between 7 and 9PM there will be a free concert by Free Spirit, “one of the top dance bands in Washington DC”, as well as remarks from the Mayor, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem.

Ninth Annual Housing Fair and Financial Fitness Day Planned

0 Comments 17 June 2009

June 16, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — The Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs (DHCA) invites housing providers, businesses, banks, credit unions, realtors, government agencies, community organizations and nonprofits interested in becoming sponsors and exhibitors to the ninth annual Housing Fair. The fair will take place on Saturday, October 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bohrer Park Activity Center, Summit Hall Farm, 506 S. Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg.

Last year’s attendance hit record levels of more than 1,000 people, with 100 sponsors and exhibitors participating. This year, turnout is expected to set new records due to the foreclosure crisis and keen interest in the federal Home Ownership Affordability and Stability Plan.

Sponsors receive recognition for their organization depending on the level of sponsorship. Sponsors’ logos are featured prominently on both Spanish and English publicity posters distributed throughout the county in the weeks leading up to the fair. In addition, sponsors’ names are published in the Housing Fair program. Exhibitors will receive prime booth space for displaying their promotional materials. Booths will be set up with tables and chairs so attendees can receive one-on-one assistance from vendors. The exhibit fee amount is tailored to the type of organization: businesses and banks; credit unions; government and education groups; and 501 (C)3 nonprofits. Exhibitors are encouraged to register before August 17 to receive a reduced rate.

“This fair is a wonderful opportunity for businesses and organizations to reach people who are in the market for housing in Montgomery County,” said Myriam Torrico, administrator of Hispanic Affairs in DHCA. “We are expecting hundreds of homeowners interested in refinancing their mortgages to attend as well as people considering home ownership for the first time. Information on rental opportunities will be provided as well as advice on the steps to take if you are in danger of losing your home.”

In addition to the rights and remedies available to homeowners and renters facing foreclosure, information will be provided on managing money and credit, keeping homes and neighborhoods safe, and saving energy and lowering utility costs. Special booths will be staffed by experts in four areas: legal issues, human rights, energy and banking

.

Businesses, government agencies, community organizations and nonprofits interested in being a sponsor or exhibitor should contact Myriam Torrico at 240-777-3627

The fair is organized by the Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs in partnership with the Housing Fair Planning committee, whose members include: the cities of Gaithersburg, Rockville and Takoma Park; The Dwelling Place; HomeFree USA; Housing and Community Initiative, Inc.; Housing Initiative Partnership, Inc.; the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County; the Latin Economic Development Corporation; the Mid-County, Silver Spring and UpCounty Regional Services Centers; the Montgomery County Coalition for Financial Literacy; the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services; and the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights.
