Habitat for Humanity and Montgomery County officials met on Friday at an affordable housing fundraising breakfast at the Maritiott in Bethesda, to discuss plans to buy up approximately 10 homes in the Glenmont area of Silver Spring.
The benefit rasied nearly $3.5 million to help Habitat for Humanity buy and renovate the 10 homes for low income individuals, in one of the areas in the county most affected by the mortgage crisis. All homes will be outfitted with eco-friendly appliances and renovations.
These homes won’t be resold to just anyone however. Those interested in purchasing these homes must meet Habitat’s guidelines of being in need of housing assistance, having 30% of their earnings dedicated to rent, and they must help in the renovation of said homes.
Executive director for Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, John Paukstis stated that they probably wouldn’t have been able to make this happen, on such a grand scale, without the help of the county.
Like many individuals and businesses, the country is also experiencing financial troubles. County Executive, Ike Leggett states that he is still dedicated to fulfilling his promise of quadrupling housing aid. This year alone, he plans to increase the budget for affordable housing by nearly $30 million.
